New cable to offer Middle East to Europe alternative
Tuesday, Jun 21, 2011
Four telecommunications players from the UK, Russia, Iran and Oman are constructing a new express cable system that will link Frankfurt, Germany to the Gulf, offering high-speed connectivity for telecommunications between the Middle East and Europe.
Oman’s Omantel, the UK’s Cable & Wireless and Russia’s Rostelcom will work with the Telecommunications Infrastructure Company of Iran to construct the cable.
They said it will offer an alternative to cables that currently run through Egypt and the Gulf of Suez into Europe from the Middle East.
The Europe Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) system will be run by each player in their respective countries.
At 6,000 km the route itself will be shorter than the alternative routes, which means it can be more economical to construct and manage.
To start with it will offer 540GB/second and increase capacity to 3.2TB/second.
